THE "NEED TO KNOW" ON DIAMONDS
What to look for when purchasing a diamond. We can help!
At Diamonds By Dakota, we feel that knowledge is truly invaluable and our clients should have all the tools needed when making a decision. We also understand that no two clients are the same and what one is looking for may not for another. In the buying process, we will ask you what your overall desire is when purchasing your diamond and go through the 4C's with you as explained below to ensure we exceed your expectations.
It’s important to remember that a diamond’s value is determined using all of the 4Cs, not just carat weight.
DIAMOND CARAT WEIGHT
The weight of your diamond is measured in carats. A metric "carat" is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat can then be subdivided into 100 "points" allowing for an even more precise measurement. With all else equal: the larger the carat, the greater the value.
DIAMOND COLOR
The diamond color evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of color. GIA’s D-to-Z diamond color-grading system measures the degree of colorlessness by comparing a stone under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions to masterstones of established color value.
Although, many of the grades are invisible to the untrained eye, they make a significant difference in diamond quality and price.
DIAMOND CLARITY
As diamonds are created from carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth, a variety of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (external characteristics) can form. The clarity grading scale is measured from FL of flawless grade to I3 of imperfect grade with all grading consistently under precise viewing conditions by trained professionals. Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature, and position of these characteristics, as well as how these affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.
DIAMOND CUT
While most assume that a diamond's cut is the shape of the diamond, it is in fact the way the diamond facets interact with the light. When grading the cut of a diamond, professionals break down the evaluation into brightness, fire, and scintillation as well as taking into account its design and craftsmanship to determine the diamonds overall interaction with light.
DIAMOND SHAPE
An important decision when shopping for your dream diamond is what shape diamond you or your loved one prefers. Each shape is unique and beautiful in its own way, the choice is yours!
